Research Group Musicians' Health
With the new professorship and the associated working group “Musicians' Health”, the Lübeck University of Music (MHL), together with the University of Lübeck (UzL), has created a new center for medical advice and treatment for musicians specializing in psychological, psychotherapeutic and neuropsychological topics. Alongside around ten other medical facilities for musicians, Lübeck is so far the only location in Germany to specialize in the mental health of musicians. This meets the increasing demand for psychological counseling and treatment for musicians.
Prof. Dr. Daniel Sebastian Scholz has held the new position since the winter semester 2022/2023, which both universities have jointly created for research, teaching and consulting. As part of the Institute of Medical Psychology (IMP) at UzL, the “Musicians' Health” working group headed by Prof. Daniel Scholz is dedicated to the prevention and mental health of musicians. In close cooperation with the UzL's neurology department at the Center of Brain, Behavior and Metabolism (CBBM), initial research projects on the topics of mental stress and the neuronal plasticity of musicians are being developed.
Lectures on the basics of healthy music-making, the neuroscience of music and seminars on how to deal with stage fright are offered to MHL and UzL students. In addition, a counseling center for music students and music professionals from northern Germany has been available since October 2022.
The HörHanse in Lübeck
The Hanse Innovation Campus brings together all those involved in the field of hearing in the HörHanse. The Musicians' Health working group deals with the psychology and hearing health of musicians. At the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences and the UKSH, the audiology and acoustics departments investigate the perception and processing of natural and technical hearing with hearing aids and cochlear implants - including music, of course! With the nationwide Hearing Acoustics Campus, the German Hearing Aid Institute (DHI) and the company hearconcept, Lübeck is the perfect location when it comes to training and science in hearing aid acoustics. The Hörhanse enables knowledge transfer and cooperation between business and science and places hearing research at the center of attention.
